Ten Easy Home Remedies for Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is a pleasant sign of motherhood. In India, it is a sharing experience of friends and relatives. Indian medicinal systems like Ayurveda and Siddha have a lot of easy home remedies for morning sickness.

Ancient Tamil literatures of South India describe the pleasant pain of morning sickness. They depict beautifully how the pregnant women in their first trimester crave for sour things like unripe mangos and they also narrate how others around them keep them happy and cheerful. There have been special rituals and medications during this period of morning sickness and nausea.

It is estimated that between 60 to 80 percent of women have morning sickness and nausea during pregnancy, sometimes with vomiting. Although nausea may be noticed in the morning, it may also occur throughout the day for some women. Even if there is no symptom of nausea, women may develop likings and aversions to certain foods. Though morning sickness is mostly manageable and generally is reduced after the first trimester of pregnancy, some women continue to experience nausea even in the following trimesters. Sometimes it goes to such a bad condition that hospitalization becomes inevitable.

Remedies for morning sickness

From ancient days there have been remedies for this morning sickness and nausea which troubles women in their early pregnancy. They can try the following remedies. Even if it does not subside with these remedies, there need not be any worry since most women are finished with morning sickness by the beginning of their fourth month.

Some common remedies for morning sickness

1) Ginger tea has been a successful remedy from ancient days. Drinking ginger with honey is an effective remedy. Put a ginger root in water and boil and after straining it add some honey to sweeten it.

2) Ancient Indian medical literatures say that unripe mango is good for morning sickness. Naturally pregnant women crave for sour things in the early stage of their pregnancy.

3) Women with morning sickness should take small and frequent meals. Many women are tempted to avoid food fearing nausea and vomiting. But physicians suggest that the stomach should not be empty.

4) Try to eat some solids like biscuits soon after waking up. Stomach may be empty during the long break at night.

5) Avoid taking solids and liquids together. Identify the triggers that cause nausea and vomiting and avoid them.

6) Avoid also spicy or fried foods or odors that can cause nausea. It is advisable to put some cardamom or lime piece in your mouth whenever there is a feeling of nausea.

7) Licking a lemon or sucking a sweet can alter the unpleasant taste in the mouth due to nausea.

8) The rooms should have pleasant and soothing smell. Put two or three drops of lavender essential oil and one of peppermint in a diffuser or humidifier to scent the air in the room. The aroma of peppermint can also help a queasy stomach.

9) Drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration, especially if you have been vomiting. Frequent vomiting may lead to dehydration. It is better to drink in between meals as stated above rather than drinking along with meals.

10) Rest is an important factor during the early stage of pregnancy. Getting plenty of rest does not mean sitting idle. Exercises like walking can help good blood circulation.
